Catholic and Episcopelians observe Lent (but I don't think they give anything up for Lent). Ony Catholics do penance during the Lent season.

Orthodox christians adhere to the original Lent celebrations. The religious fast is no animal products (meat, milk, etc.) No alcohol or oil. There are 6 church services a week (not everyone comes to all). The Catholics I know usually give up one thing, like soda.

I thought this was only a Catholic thing - my AME friend also fasts during lent. Not sure if this comes from the Methodist or Episcopal influence.
