Are you asking what you should have said?

This is where it is very useful to have done your homework. Find out about the company prior to interviews, especially what positions exist within the company. You can do this by calling the company's receptionist or a secretary within in the company.

A way to answer the question in the middle of an interview when you don't know that information is to ask the interviewer, "What is the chain of command here?" Or "I'm happy to hear that there might be growth opportunities in this company within a year! How is the company organized, and what opportunities are available to me?"
