I had a psychiatrist photocopy my credit card to charge me later and for their records... but I wouldn't trust a hotel to do that... too many people and too easy to misuse. If there are fraudulent charges, notify your credit card company right away... perhaps see if you could be issued a new card number if you're that worried. (Also, make sure that any automatic payments are updated to the new number.)

Best of luck!

I used to work in a "reputable" hotel.

Take my advisxe, change the credit card number now and never ever give a hotel a CC again.

They will say, oh... we have to have a CC. Now they don't! Cash is still legal tender (at least in the U.S., I realize your talking about the UK).

Barring illegal activity from the very low apid staff that have access to you CC number, and barring the huge security risk in storing your CC number in any form, the hotel itself can just charge as much as they want to to the CC after you check out. They can charge you mini-bar charges if the maid hits the mini-bar for example.

Another hustle the hotel i worked at did was add 20% to all minibar charges (they count on people thinking oh, iu used the minibar, i can't remember how much . . . )

They also add charges for "room damages" or cutting your stay short, made up fees etc. stc. etc.

If they do this to you, never underestimate the influence violence can have on a hotel owner/manager!

In my experience it is normal practice for the hotel desk to take an 'imprint' of your credit card. This is in case you do a runner afetr emptying the mini bar and ringing your best friend in Australia.
If the hotel is reputable, then you have nothing to worry about. But just to put your mind at rest - double check your next statement.

They can't do anything with a photocopy that they wouldn't have been able to do with the number you would have to provide for payment.

Its common overseas for hotels to do that. Sometimes theyll copy your ID or passport as well. Just be glad that most places dont fingerprint yet; because D.N.A swabbing will surely follow.

Sounds fishy to me...I never heard of a thing...I never even heard of photo IDs being copied to say the least...better keep tabs on the use and maybe contact you CC compnay and let them know.....they may give you some advise or they may see a pattern of fraud.

Just have your boyfriend keep an eye on his monthly statement. Haven't heard that one before, usually they just run it to make sure they have the number on file, while you stay. However, either way they have the number. Just watch the statements. good luck.
