I want to get my actual prescription that my doctor wrote out for me back, but the pharmacy told me that once they filled the prescription once, now they have ownership of it. I have never heard of this before, but they said it was the law. If she gave me my prescription back, she would be breaking the law. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yep, I would say this is true. If they gave your script back, then you could take it to another pharmacy and have 2-3-4 pharmacies giving you the same medication. This is all too much work for the pharmacies. Don't know but would say it is true. Call other pharmacies and ask around--see what others say. Just a thought.

This is true because if you got your prescription back you could go from pharmacy to pharmacy and collect the same drugs over and over again. For example im on valium and pain killers but if i got my prescription form back i would spend the rest of the week filling up on drugs, know what i mean? you could photocopy your script before you go into the pharmacy if you want to do that for record keeping purposes, not suggesting you would but don't bother trying to forge or make false script with scanner or something cause each script is encoded and has identifiable artwork like you see on bank notes, any way probably went a bit off track there, hope it was informative. So yes true it is the law she wasn't lying to you.

You can't give back the physical prescription; it's against the law. You can have the prescription transferred to another pharmacy. The pharmacy has to keep records of every prescription filled.

You can always get the prescription transferred to another pharmacy. It's easy - call the pharmacy you want and they will get the info form the first pharmacy. I don't think you can get the actual precription back, because it would appear that you hadn't filled it at all and then you could get extra refills. I'm not sure why you want to know...You Md usually keeps a copy and might let you Xerox it.

If the medicine you need is a a regulated or controlled one then the Pharmacy have right to get hold of it and keep this prescription for their files; and for monitoring by the concerned federal agency. However if it is just a common drug , like for a simple headache or body pain they cannot just get it. Now since they have taken it, and you need to take in the said medication, the best thing to do is get an appointment with your doctor and discuss your health concern to him.

You can have your prescription moved to another pharmacy they don't own it per se.. but like your medical records you can get a copy of it but they retain the originals even if you move to another doctor. Ask her for the copy if she says no then call your doctor and ask him what is going on with that pharmacy.
