Thats her coping mechanism, since she can't control her surroundings, the only way she feels in control is when she cuts. She really needs to go see a Physciatrist, or go talk to a therapist, that has knowledge dealing with people that cut. I worked with teens that cut and are emotionally and mental disturbed. I've seen them make a complete turn around. I can't stress enough that she needs to go get help before it gets out of control. Good Luck to you both!!

Three things: control, attention, confusion.
SHE has control over doing it or not, where she does it, and what she does it for. My best guess is that she doesn't have that power over other things which is why she wants to control this. She needs to have things she's in control of. A good idea would be for her to join a sports team. Then she can use the team events and practices as a means of getting away from her parents, and she can have control over something all of her own.
SHE gets attention for it. Obviously. But that's the most difficult part. If you don't pay attention then she could do things more dangerous to get attention. No advice on this one.
Confusion means she doesn't know what to do instead. If she really likes the outlet of cutting perhaps she would rather draw all over herself. They make henna pens where she can make tattoos on herself and they'll last a week. Or some thin Crayola markers. I don't suggest a pen because she can use that to cut.

And remeber for your own sanity that you aren't a shrink, and sometimes, some people CAN'T be helped.
Good Luck!

This is an actual mental health issue. It's common in teen girls but boys will do it, too. The person is not usually suicidal, but they often have problems coping with stress or overwhelming feelings. Many people who self-injure say they do it because they normally feel "numb" and cutting helps them to "feel alive." Others talk about the "sense of control" they may get from self-injury. This may be the first time or thing that they have felt a sense of control in their lives. Most agree that incidents of self-injury are triggered by stress and anxiety. The "cutter" often feels deep shame and guilt from this ritual.

People who self-injure can learn to use new and healthier coping mechanisms. This process may take years to develop. It also is important to get help from a therapist who specialized in self-injury.

This is an increasingly common phenomenon, and congratulations to you for wanting to find out more/understand what is happening with your girlfriend.

I recommend the site www.cmha.ca, which is the Canadian Mental Health Association website. On the left side of the main page you will see a link to a new informational pamphlet on "Youth and Self-Injury" which you might find helpful.

For those of us who are not "cutters", it is hard to understand this expression of distress. But we can learn to identify the emotional anguish that drives someone to that point, so that we can help them.

Good luck and good health to you both.

self mutilation, believe it or not, has nothing to do with suicide. she is not suicidal, and you should not leave her unless you will be more harmful staying around.

If you cause physical harm to your body in order to deal with overwhelming feelings, know that you have nothing to be ashamed of. It's likely that you're keeping yourself alive and maintaining psychological integrity with the only tool you have right now. It's a crude and ultimately self-destructive tool, but it works; you get relief from the overwhelming pain/fear/anxiety in your life. The prospect of giving it up may be unthinkable, which makes sense; you may not realize that self-harm isn't the only or even best coping method around.

Self-injurious behavior does not necessarily mean you were an abused child. It usually indicates that somewhere along the line, you didn't learn good ways of coping with overwhelming feelings. You're not a disgusting or sick; you just never learned positive ways to deal with your feelings.

It is your girlfriend's way of controlling her environment and emotions. She needs to seek assistance for this problem. It does not go away on its own nor can she do it alone. Talk to her openly about the issues in your relationship. Be supportive and encourage her to seek help.

It is a way (and an unhealthy one at that) that she has found to deal with stress, depression, emotional pain and distress, etc.

Speak gently with her about how much she means to you and how concerned you are about her, and try to convince her to get help in finding other (safer, healthier) ways of dealing with life's problems.

If you approach her with anger or are overly aggressive, you will likely do more harm than good.

Because she is sad and when she cuts herself the pain from cutting distracts her from whatever is wrong. Just keep loving her.

Because she can't handle the pain of her life or whatever the case may be so she replces it with a different pain, something she herself can control. Get her some professional help.

so called "emo" people find life a lot harder and have lots of mental and emotional pain, they cut themselves because the physical pain makes them forget about the mental/emotional. make sure its a clean blade. and its most likely just a phase. good luck!
