The saying originated because cats seem to have a knack for surviving-they can land on their feet when falling(although that doesn't always work, match a dog much bigger than them in a fight etc.
They don't actually live 9 lives though.

Your cat does not have 9 lives, but I'm sure you already know that.
The 9 lives thing is just an old wives tale...it probably comes from the fact that if a cat falls or jumps from a short to medium height they have the ability to twist in mid-air and land on their feet.

Cats only have ONE life but they have 8 near death experiences! I think one of mine has used up most of his quota and The other is trying to catch up as quickly as possible!
Unfortunately for us they pack that life into a fraction of ours and we are the ones left looking for another cat to look after us when they go!

Cats usually live about 9-15 years. Unless you are elderley, there is a good chance that your feline friend will pass before you go. Otherwise, put him in your will.

The expression "A cat has nine lives" is only said because of the cats uncanny luck in perilous situations. It only seems like that a cat has nine lives. They don't really. Run over one or shoot one and see if it is still alive. NOT!

well there lives are so short they need 9. we on the other hand could live to be past 100 if we take care of ourselves so we don't need 9 lives.

Because they have a habit of doing some crazy things. Well humans do too, but usually we can use our reason to be able to get ourselves out of trouble. :)
