What reasons must police have to search a vehical in New York? Can they just do it for the fun of it or do they have to have an excuse?

Furtive movement's, stolen vehicle, arrest, hit by drug dog. Most searches require very specific reasons, just for fun is not one of them. Ref: Belton vs. New York / Ross vs Kansas

You really need to be more specific. But, you need either probable cause or consent...Or the vehicle must be taken into police custody, and then it is inventoried. More information would be helpful.

The Consitution is just as valid in New York as it is anywhere else, and probable cause is still necessary.
