I feel I've entered an elitist club I was previously unaware of. People say hello, smile and stop me in the street!

Aren't people wierd?

Yeah I always notcied that when we had a dog.

When we lost him the conversations suddenly stopped but then so does the incentive to go for walks.

Now I take our ferrets out for a walk and we certainly get comments and smiles then (almost a few traffic accidents too) Hahah.

I had the same issue when I brought my Chi to Petsmart for the first time. He was a little excited because he saw a bunch of other dogs and people...He didn't know what to do with himself....But, there were so many people that came up to me just to pet him...Others came up to me just to ask what breed he was because his markings are unique. He is black and cream colored with a white belly...and a white stripe on his forhead and a white tip at the end of his tail...He also has the salt&pepper effect on his back...with black and white...And then it is mostly black on his sides...He is really gorgeous. But, yeah I know what you mean....Any other time I am in town, no one stops to talk to me...But, when I bring my dog, I get stopped alot. Lol.

Dogs are a great way to pick up the opposite sex, lol, and meet new people. When I was in highschool, I would take my siberian husky out for walks in the local campground. I would either get people screaming and running because I had a dangerous wolf on a leash or people would come over to pet him.

Dog people tend to be a community. Most people think that people with dogs (acting responsibly of course) are generally nicer and freindlier people. If you got an obvious purebred, then you are in even a more closely knit community. It shows a great deal of responsibility to have a well-mannered, well-groomed, and happy dog at the end of your lead. Whichever breed or mixed breed you got, please treat it with all the love and caring it deserves.

I know excatly what you mean. I have dreads and lots of piercing, so most people tend to try not to look at me.
A couple of days ago I was walking a very large GSD. You would think people would stay clear, but instead everyone came up to say hello! Especially little old ladies (don't mean this to sound bad but its just what happened).
People are very very strange.

I know what you mean, but it is a nice way to connect with people isn't it?

Years ago (about 30) I bought what was then, an unknown breed puppy ( Golden Retriver). People would stop me on the street to talk to me about that puppy.

We now own a beautiful Old English Sheepdog..My son's love to walk her around because they say, she's a "chick magnet"! lol

Having a dog is beneficial in many ways. It gives you a reason to get up in the morning. Go walks get fresh air. Meet people as you are now aware and they give you sooooooo much Unconditional love. I am so happy you have joined the doggie loving people

It's funny but before I had a dog I didn't like talking to people as I passed them in the halls of my building. They were all strangers and such. And I guess I was a little anti-social too. But now I have to talk to them because the puppy jumps on everyone she encounters. ( I am working on that problem ) But I enjoy it now I get to meet my neighbors and their animals! I guess having a dog has changed me more than anything.

Absolutely, people are weird! But I think the thing about walking with a dog that makes people smile and speak to you is, they immediately assume you are a nice person because you have adopted and are taking care of another being outside of your species. Not to mention, dogs are cute and people love to pet and play with them. Have fun with your new companion!
