The record for the fastest growth of an individual goes to a tropical species of bamboo that reportedly reaches 100 feet (30 m) in three months. The Pacific giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) may grow up to 150 feet (46 m) or more in length, and has been clocked at 18 inches a day.

I think I remember hearing that bamboo is the fasted growing plant and by the way, it's not a tree, it's a species of grass.

if you talking of a single day, then its the bamboo plant which can grow 18 in.(46 cm) in 1 day.
if you are talking about whole lifetime of a plant, then the Coast Redwood is the tallest which can grow up to a height of 300m.

Japaneese knot weed, except in Japan where it has natural enemies - it depends what you mean by out grows but Japaneese knot weed fits under most interpretations - it is a monster plant.

Nothing grows quicker (if that's what you mean) than the bamboo. Some varieties can grow 6ft in a day!!!

Kudzu is horrible in the Southeast USA. I have heard you can actually see it grow when the conditions are right.
