I want (need?) to talk to someone about what's going on in my life. I need help sorting out the problems and what to do about them. I know that I'm depressed and anxious - and always have been pretty much. I've tried various anti-depressants, but I don't tolerate them well, so I no longer take them. I just need help trying to decide what to do in my life and someone to listen. I think also that I have dependency issues - maybe even to the point of a personality disorder. Do I see a psychologist, LPC or a psychiatrist? Why?

I think an LPC is a licensed professional counselor. I found one that can see me relatively quickly, but she practices out of her home and I'm not really comfortable with that - it just seems unprofessional.

If you don't want to go the drug route then I suggest a psychologist. Most of the time they are more geared towards talk therapy. Psychiatrists like to write prescriptions.

A psychiatrist will decide whether or or not you need to see a psychologist,or maybe your GP can do this, but if you need antidepressants you need a psychiatrist. If you feel you just want to be listened to and sorted out it sounds like you need therapy of some sort, like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. A talking therapy that will help you to think more logically and maybe see things in a different light. This kind of therapy can be done by many different qualified people, ie: Occupational therapists, psychiatric nurses, all trained specifically in this. Counsellors are quite good at this.
What's an LPC.??
Hope that clears things up for you a bit.
Good luck.

You could start with a LPC, or a LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) They would be cheaper than a Psychiatrist and still be able to give you mental health help. The main difference (from my experience) is a Psychiatrist can prescribe prescription drugs, where a LPC or a LCSW can't. Find one you feel comfortable with!
