It was originally done for modesty's sake. So that a woman wouldn't have to hike her leg up over the bar...which used to be considered unladylike. And since women used to almost exclusively wear skirts, it also provided a place for her skirt to fall down and give her some modesty.

Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn't it? The bar for males seems somewhat like a torture device!

1. Females often wore dresses when riding a bike and these would ride up and be unseemly if there was a crossbar.


I think that guys bike should have a gap as it can get rough on the family jewels if you slip off the saddle when coming to a sudden stop!

Women use to wear dresses and skirts for such occasions and men wore trousers, so it was for getting on and off the bike without flashing everyone!

Back in the old days women mostly wore dresses so women's bikes were set up like that.
