Back when they invented Hell it was a time of feudalism, serfdom, monarchies, oppression, conquest, empires and all that horrid stuff.

Why does Hell continue to exist? Why haven't they written it out yet?

Or are they trying to morph it from a place of eternal suffering, wailing and gnashing of teeth into just eternal seperation from God?

The only people who believe in the hell you are talking about are fundementalist (evangelical baptist, non denominations, and various literalists groups) or people that don't know what they are talking about trying to attack religion with statements about concepts and teaching they do not understand how are really taught.

Hell literally means separation from God (not just it has always been that way if you understand the history of the people that the stories were about (mostly writtten in exile)), the fire, brimstone (apocalyptic prophecy was a common literary from in the pre and early Christian era, used in all of the types of writing of times, hardly just the bible) etc are metaphors for the pain the soul goes through when separated from God.

PS if you don;t think there is still fuedalism, serfdom, monarchies, opression , empires and conquests (mostly new economic models of them these days then you need to look around again. get our occasionally.

If you've ever read the bible,Jesus, actually went there for 3 days in suffering for us.It is a very real place, gnashing of teeth, etc. the WORLD trie's to negate the fact because(I believe)they don't want to ack nowledge the fact there is punishment for those who don't follow him (Jesus) and change there way's(repentance).Hell was not invented,IS actually a true place of suffering for the ungodly. What do you think should happen to child molester's?who, don't care to change & keep raping innocintchildren? If there was no Hell ,I think the WORLD would be on a free for all.& hell is separation from God,what a horrible feeling that would be!! I am a non-denominational christian. Also,it's believing in the unseen(FAITH)WE believe this. And,it IS written!

I think they are trying to move it from the center of the Earth to some other location, since science can now determine what's in the Earth's core.

Then again, there is that recording someone took from a shaft leading into hell... lol, I can't type that without laughing.

feudalism, serfdom, monarchies, oppression, conquest, empires and all that horrid stuff still exist so that could be why. God could yell to the world over all loud speakers"I am real so obey me" instead of people having to have blind faith. I can't say I am impressed with buddhism that much either. Religion...pft!

I'm not obsessed.

Are you? Really?

It's just something the fundies get pleasure using to threaten normal people - because, it seems, eternal separation from a god in whom I do not believe will serve me jolly well right.

ROFL: I just LOVE the idea of a fundie quoting Scarlett O'Hara as proof of a Christian hell! You couldn't make that sort of thing up!

How do you know hell exists? You don't. Have you been there? No. Do you have video tape of it? No. Are you saying you have faith that Hell exists? Does that make you evil? Good things or nothing will happen to people who live good lives. Bad things or nothing will happen to people who are bad in life. It's a simple but true theory and not really worth thinking about it beyond that imo.

Depending on where you retrieve your definition of "Hell" at, I view it as Man's common grave...I don't believe that it's a fiery place of torture like most people have been taught to believe. When we die the bible says that the dead are conscience of nothing...its an eternal sleep for those who "won't be going to heaven"....so let me see....eternal sleep...while your conscience of nothing....doesn't sound paninful unless your one who desires to live forever in "Heaven". Maybe I'm wrong....but I haven't died yet so I really can't comment I guess it's one of those things you have to experience inorder to have an educated response on. :)

For the ignorant, it removes the possibility of blame from destructive human instincts. But generally it's just an excuse. Personally, I don't believe in the concept. Hell is purely a human invention and the Bible was written by men, not a higher being.

The church still needs all the power it can get, the obsession with hell was worse in the dark ages though.

GGGRRRRR.....Hell...Bad place to be...lots of smoke burning my eyes and stirring up my allergies....COUGH, COUGH....Who's DAT over there? Looks like a giant red goat! Wait a minute this isn't the mens room! Hey what do you think your doing Goat-boy! GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY SOUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..........NO PLEASE DON'T LET THIS BE THE END! AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGG!!! That's why. Fear of death, fear of the unknown. fear of being punished for all the depraved evil things you have done or thought of in your pathetically short existence. Hell is all of our fears wrapped up into one nice tidy package and it isn't ever going away. That's why.
