All things to consider include safety, not too much passenger room (*smile*), efficiency, convention, economical feasibility and most importantly, we do not want her to feel spoiled tooling around the town.

She won't be 16 for a year and a half but I need to start thinking about this now. Thanks for your help.

I'd buy them a Matchbox car, and tell them they can get a real one when they can afford it!

Honestly, it is what SHE can afford. Unless of course you plan on footing the bill of cost, maintenance and insurance for her. Does she work? Will she work? How will she pay for gas? Is she responsible enough for a car? Does she even want a car?

Not only do you have to consider what is safe/reliable, etc, but you also need to check in with her (your) insurance company. While the Civic is an all around great car, it is more cost to insure because of it's attraction to theives.

I think that a used car is the best option for a first car. Firstly, the price - much more cost effective. And secondly, if you buy smart, the used car will be reliable enough. It's not like she will travelling long distances from civilization, and doesn't have her cell phone glued to her ear - she'll be fine. Make sure she has some jumper cables, a can of tire filler, and a jub of washer fluid - and make sure SHE knows how to use them.

I found I learned a lot about taking care of my own car/self with my first (used) car. You can't buy that kind of confidence. It wasn't the most sexy car, but it was MINE. (it was manual and I taught myself!)

Something used, for sure!
My first car was a Nissan Sentra. It was a stick, and the one I learned on, so the clutch had to be replaced soon after getting it, but other than that, no problems at all. I even got into an accident with it after driving for 3 months - tore the front end off of a Cadillac Eldorado, but my old jalopie came through with a small scratch and a minor dent in the door. It wasn't big, but when needed, I managed to fit 6-8 people in it, although now I know that wasn't safe.

Try a Ford Festiva, they are as compact as cars come and she deffinately won't feel spoiled driving it. You can get one for under $1000. I wouldn't give her anything newer than a 1993 model for any car. It's her first car and she's more than likely going to put some dents in it. Much better to buy a cheap decent running car that you can buy out right and only put liability insurance on.

For a sixteen year old?

Considering how distracted they are by Friends etc, I would want to say just get one from toys-r-us. If you are paying the insurance and gas, 90's model compact, Mazda or Honda, they run forever, (partial to the Mazda Protege') definitely an automatic.

I think a small 4 cylinder car is the go. Maybe a small hatchback or 3-5door as they call them these days? All you have said plus making sure it is 2nd hand.

depending on the car NEW or USED?

New depending on how much you want to spend....

look into GMs , :chevys , pontiacs ,saturns (very nice cars lately) very high gov safety ratings on most compact sedans, and excellent gas mileage)

USED . could be anything, on a good used car you can save yourself a LOT of money without jeopardizing her safety , efficiency or "cool"-ness>>>>>(((((((((((((one of the best way of spoiling your kid is buying him/her a CAR.)))))))))))))))))

>>>>>>>>> but its great , when you are able to do it !!!!!!

I would deffinetly get a mid-sized 4 door vehicle,I bought my daughter 2 of them.yes,2...she wrecked her first one...A mid-size vehicle,6 cylinder, is much safer,...chevy lumina is a good one...dodge Intrepid also...you can find them if you look really hard for about $1700.00...you don't want to go any cheaper really, because then you only get real crap...something with higher miles, but sounds good and look descent....these smaller cars are no good for beginner drivers....trust me I know..
