Your tonsillitis is caused by a bacteria since you were given antibiotics. Otherwise, doctors will not prescribe you with such if it is caused by a virus. How many times has it recurred? You need to consult your physician about this, because you might be resistant with the antibiotics that he prescribed. People who suffer from recurring infections usually needs a stronger antibiotic each time. While you're at it, also ask him about the consequences of recurring tonsilitis. If it caused by Group A strep bacteria, you also have a chance of acquiring RHD or Rheumatic Heart Disease. I'm sure you know that it's as bad as it sounds. I have friends who acquired RHD due to recurring tonsillitis. Tonsillectomy is usually a much wiser choice.

If the tonsilitis was caused by a virus, then antibiotics won't help and it would go away on it's own. Most cases of tonsilitis however are not caused by viruses and are bacterial infections. Tiny spots on the tonsils sounds like strep throat and you would need a mild antibiotic to get rid of that. If you are prescribed antibiotics, take ALL of them. Don't assume that just because the symptoms are gone that you're cured. This could make you sicker and make the bacteria resistant to the antibiotic and then you'll be in a horrible predicament.

It might be a recurring staph or strep infection...and yes it will go away eventually without meds...in fact, the more antibiotics you take, the more resistant your infection will become. I used to get a strep virus about every 2 months and I would be sick with flu like symptoms for several days. After about a year of missing 2 or 3 days of work every few weeks, I had my tonsils out, and haven't had since then.
Tonsillectomy might be your solution..but beware.. The surgery is a snap for kids but for adults..it's miserable hell.

White spots on the tonsils usually occur in strep throat. The tonsils may be large and red. There is high grade fever. Lymph glands in the neck may be enlarged. Strep throat must be treated properly with a suitable antibiotic to prevent rheumatic fever. A shot of long- acting penicillin once a month will prevent strep throat.

I am studying Pharmacy at university so i would say that if your tonsills look swollen or have spots on them, then i would contact your gp. He will be able to tell you if its a bacterial infection of if it is viral. If it is bacterial then anitbiotics should clear it up. I woul try taking some painkillers and drinking plenty in the mean time. It may also be worth discussing getting your tonsills out with you doctor. Hope this helps.

You can have them removed or take a penicillin shot monthly up to a certain age or make sacrifices like removing from your diet all sweets and ice cold drinks and ice creams and smoking. If you don't do any of these suggestions, a recurrent problem will cause a problem in your heart. That's what my family doctor told me.
