Due to handling the food/drink cans become dented. As per quality procedure it should not be used. What is the reason or mechanism behind this?

the seals of the cans can be breached from the dents and cause food poisoning to you wich can result in death. if air is let in bacteria will grow. very dangerous!

EDIT: To avoid botulism food poisoning do not consume foods from swollen or dented cans or lids, cracked jars, loose lids, clear liquids that turned milky, jars that spurt when opened, or home canned products that have not been processed according to the USDA guidelines. Never taste home canned meats and vegetables (other than pickles) until they have boiled hard for 15 to 20 minutes. The number of botulism food poisoning cases are not high, but the consequences are severe. It is not worth risking your life. PS, just as cCc says ( below - good advice) when in doubt throw it out. she is absolutly right. take her advice. it is better to loose a buck or 2 from throwing the food out than to loose your life. food can be replaced, you can't.

Dents in cans can put stresses on seals and cause them to leak. If this happens, microoganisms can enter the product and cause it to spoil.

A minor dent on the side of the can is not likely to cause problems. However, you should discard any can that is dented on the lids or seams. Also throw out cans that are leaking, bulging, or are rusted unless the rust can be easily removed by light rubbing.

If you aren't sure, don't take any chances. As with all foods, if you have any doubt as to the safety of a product, throw it out!

This rule is for grocery stores... if you drop a can and dent it in your own home...
OR
Go shopping someplace that is *bag your own*... the cans can get dented as they throw them in your shopping cart..

Try picking up one of the dented ones and show it to the check out person.. watch the *shrug* you get... if it was bad ... then everyone would be sueing the grocery right out of business... hahhaha

TERRIBLE *** TERRIBLE *** I SAY

Inward dents are okay, it shouldn't damage the product,,outward dents means the product is contaminated or worse.

This is just a matter of cosmetics. There is nothing wrong with the product.
