My boyfriend and I got our first tattos on Friday, and they are starting to peel, which I guess is normal. But, we were told not to pick at the scabs and try to avoid screwing with the peeling skin. It's unavoidable, but my boyfriend is peeling a lot (he got QUITE the masterpiece on his shoulder blade, lol) and I was wondering if it's okay that when I rub the lotion in, that I'm taking off some peeling skin. Thanks. :)

I did research it, thanks. My friends actually said I researched it a little too much. It took me three months to find my tattoo place. So, don't think I'm just an eighteen year old that decided she wanted one the day before. :)

It's just that he was really swollen/red afterwards, and I was just hoping that I wasn't messing with anything. I knew we would peel, but I wasn't prepared for how much. lol. I paid a lot of money for these babies, and I'm not about to screw them up! lol. :) But thanks for the answers so far!

that's fine. the skin that is coming off when you put lotion on is dead skin anyway. as long as he's not grabbing and peeling off the skin himself, you should be fine.

This is normal and just out of curiosity I hope the lotion you are using is cocoa butter...the best thing to use is this not only will help you guys heal better it will nurish your skin...and I also suggest not to go out in the sun while you are healing (it will fade away because it dryes out the skin) and yes avoid picking at the scabs ;p)...
Good luck!

Yes, that is normal, just don't actually "peel" the skin off, but rubbing it with lotion is fine. The flaking is normal.

sounds like you didnt research tattoos before you went and got one. This is all normal, it will look fine in a few days, just keep using lotion.

tatoos get really dry when they have first been done but this is just like dead skin with the new skin underneath. Try putting vasiline or some sudacrem (for babies sore bums) thats what the tatooist told me when I had mine done, to moisturise it and help prevent this happening.
Hope this helps x
