I need to buy a new car. It needs a 5 door and have a 1.6 engine. I have about £8k to spend. Whats my best bet, it will need to last a long time and be as cheap as possible to run.

I agree about the VWs - very reliable, although you can't go wrong with a Ford either.....cheap to run, cheaper to insure and the parts are cheaper if anything does go wrong......

Wish I could have a new car...........lucky you!

Get a 2 year old Passat or Mondeo. No 8k brand new car will be much cop, and unless your so rich that throwing away £8000 means nothing to you, why even consider a brand new car?

These options will be cheaper, will have lost the worst of their value already (so you won't lose so much value), will still be cheap to run and be a damn sight better to drive than a Kia Rio or VW Fox that you'll be stuck with otherwise.

VW Golfs or the slightly smaller Polos last for years, my Golf has your specifications and has done over 140,000 miles without a single problem. They are very economical and are well known to last far longer than most other cars. I would never chose a different make!
