why is it so hot in California today? Is it because of global warming?

It is obviously global warming. It is the same global warming that is making it cold in Canada. Everyone knows that global warming can explain every possible kind of weather. If we a couple years where the Earth became slightly cooler, it would be blamed on global warming.
