I work for FuneralHomes.com and this is a common event - for an employer's relative, a card is certainly appropriate - it should just be simple, like "Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time" or "you (and/or your family) is in our prayers" or "we offer condolences for the loss of your loved one" etc... I would locate the funeral home and get their address to send the card - they will either hold it there for the family, at the services, or forward it (they usually will not give the family's address). Flowers are also comforting, though I would keep the arrangement delicate, as they are not close family/friends.

By all means, send a sympathy card.
Do you have access to the obituary? If so, check to see if the family asked for donations. You can send a check to the charity listed. Or, you can send one to any charity in the name of the deceased. Be sure to include your boss' address so the charity can send him a note telling of the donation.

If you would rather send flowers, you will need to know where the funeral home is (that's when the obit comes in handy). But, you will need to send them quickly (depending upon when the funeral takes place)

Your boss will be happy with card, I'm sure.

There are a lot of nice sympathy cards, with appropriate words already in them. You just sign your name to the card.

Not flowers unless it's part of a group thing, where everyone in your office contributes toward them. Or an individual arrangement is okay if you are very close friends with your boss.

I would just write a card and keep the text simple. Only if you work closely with your boss, and you have talked about personal stuff before, would I say anything more like 'let me know if there is anything I can do'. If you have never talked about non-business stuff before then I would just stick to the general condoleances.

Send a sympathy card to your boss. Express your sorrow about the loss of his sister.
