They make a light blocking fabric that you can sew onto the back of curtains. I have used it on all of my curtains and it does what it says. I know JoAnn's Fabrics carries it, that's where I got mine. Good luck!

I live in a big city and am really sensitive to light when I'm sleeping. I love the room darkening shades. They're pretty ugly so I have them hung recessed behind my honeycomb shades that let the light through. That way I can have both light or darkness AND privacy at the same time. I highly recommend the room darkening shades! Any home store like Home Depot or Lowes will have them and they're relatively inexpensive.

Blackout curtains or shades are good for darkening a room. These are especially good for helping an infant know it's time to sleep if there are lights constantly beaming into the nursery. The same goes for older children. You can find them at the link below, or google 'blackout curtains'

Alot of light comes into our bedroom as well. Bought wood blinds and curtains made for blocking light (they have some kind of rubbery backing)
Good luck

I have this problem in my master bedroom -- my neighbor's security light shines right into our side yard.
I purchased room darkening roller blinds. They roll at the way up to the top of the window, so you don't see them during the day (the valance hides them.) I only pull them down at night and they block every single sliver of light.
They are VERY inexpensive and install in minutes (literally.) I have also seen them at KMart and at some hardware stores. I have *not* seen them at Target or Home Depot.

You could get a room darkening shade (at the hardware store/home store) they will completely block out the light... or you could get a window cling thing... you apply the gray film to the window and it keeps the light from being quite so obtrusive

If you are in the UK places like Lewis's sell black out linings which you hang with your normal curtains. I have these in all of my bedrooms and they work really well.

I use insulated curtains, they are kind of heavy and come in stinky colors but I bought a neutral color and painted some designs on them.
