He wants a street bike to get to school etc. He has no experience riding. He does drive a little, but the one time I let him use my SUV alone, hemowed down a neighbors fence.

Try explaining to your son that you value his life and love far too much than to gamble it away. Sit down and go over the pros and cons of him owning a bike. Tell him to attend a motorcycle safety course. If you don't buy the motorcycle it will still be educational for him.

Are you talking dirt bike or street bike? For a street bike, no way - too many people on the road who just don't pay attention. If you want to give them a dirt bike, make sure they get all the protective clothing/gear and maybe sign them up for some riding safety lessons. A buddy of mine has a terrible scar on his leg from a motorcycle accident when he was like 12. Basically he wiped out and the bike was on top of him, the wheel still spinning chewing up his leg.

In light of your additional details I would have to say "Hell No!" Granted with a bike, he wouldn't be able to cause as much destruction of property (bike sized holes in fences are easier and cheaper to repair than SUV sized holes) but he wouldn't have any protection in an accident. I believe his safety is paramount and trumps his disappointment should you put your foot down!

My friend's son was 17 when he used his own money to buy a motorcycle. My friend was so worried about him because she just knew how young he was and how foolish even the best young person can be. She actually asked her husband to take the motorcycle somewhere so they could pretend it was stolen. Her husband said if they did something like that the son would know, and he'd never forgive them - ever. As a result of this worry that she'd lose her son if she did this deceitful thing she and her husband did nothing. Two days later her son was killed on the motorcycle, and over a decade later she harbors the guilt of backing down when it came to just having the motorcycle brought somewhere.

Tell your son he can buy a motorcycle when he's an adult, and in the meatime he can ride the bus or walk to school.

Do we get to choose between the monkey with a gun and the teen on a motorcycle? Cause if we do, I choose the monkey....at least with the monkey there's a chance it my accidently unload it. If you love your son I think that you need to have him wait a bit for the bike, nothing spells instant death quicker than a bad split second decision that splatters grey matter all over the road.... You know there have been real studies done on teens (compared to adults) that show that impulse control is not as highly functioning in teens as it is in most adults.

No way on this earth I would give a teenager a motorcycle! And, I wouldn't listen to what a teen has to say on this subject as they are not old enough to be wise enough to answer. Same with a sports car. No way. Teens only need one thing to drive, a beat up junker that still gets around. For one, that's a car to mess up if they do wreck. And for two, it teaches them the value of a dollar to have to work to get a nicer car they will appreciate more if they pay for at least half of it, if you want to swing a deal with them like that.

Depends on the child. Has he been responsible in other areas, has he ridden one before, is this a race bike, street bike, etc. If they have been around them before and know how to respect them, it's fine. If they've never ridden ATV's or cycles before, I would make them take a safety course, which they would hate, but still, better to make them hate you for a couple of hours than hate yourself for life because he got hurt.

No he doesnt seem like he's ready for a bike yet. I dont think any young men is unless he shows that he can act like someone that knows what their doing! People get killed on these days very easy! Just think about it for a while before u make you're choice.

haha - that was a really funny simile by the way! lol! To answer your question though - I think that if the teenager is mature and responsible enough to handle driving a motorcycle, then it's okay.

I think giving a teenager anything that powerful is like giving a monkey a loaded gun!
