I have a four month old Japanese Chin (female) and her vet told me that she will weigh approx. 5 lbs at adulthood. She is very loving, doesn't bark, and isn't needy at all. She is the perfect pet, already potty trained and gets along great with other dogs. I keep tossing back and forth the idea of getting another pup so they can grow up together. I have a great work schedule that allows me to spend lots of time with her, but I know she misses the company of another dog. She plays with a shih-tzu occasionally and she loves him to death. They play so well together and I see how happy she is when shes with him. I'm just wondering if it's a good idea or not. If you do think it's a good idea, should I get another Japanese Chin or should I get another breed. The only breeds I'd consider would be small (7lbs and under). I like Yorkshire Terriers (very expensive though) and I like papillons. Also, since I have a female, should I get a male or another female.

I think getting another dog would be great.

something to consider besides the same size, which you already have, is personality. Make sure that the other dog you get will have the same energy level as a Chin. I recommend going to www.akc.com and doing some breed research. A papillon would be great!!! They are average energy level dogs. Not lazy like a pug, not over energetic like a Yorkie. Another Chin would be ideal, but a little variety to me is better. I have a pug and a beagle who get along like PB&J (that would have a cute name for them). They have the same energy level mostly and are the same size 10.8 lbs. and 10.9 lbs.

I admit I haven't had too many dogs in my life but as an animal lover I would say yes. I believe animals like to have a fellow animal friend. I don't think the breed matters it's who wins your heart. I think before you commit to the 2nd dog pay attention to temprement. Let the two dogs interact with each other to see how they get along. Male or Female shouldn't matter either if they are both fixed. The person or store you get the second pup from should also be able to give you some helpful advice. Give a little extra love to your first pup until your new situation becomes normal.

Yes, think it would be a good idea to get another small dog. They do like to buddy up. Male or female doesn't matter. Just make sure they are spayed or neutered when they get to the right age. Now is a good time for her to get a buddy. Try to get one near her size and age. They will have a ball playing together with you. Shih-tzu's can be nippy. Try not to get another dog that is real dominant or your gal may lose her place with you in the order of the pack.

Two females won't fight. And you know what a male and female will do. Unless you're considering neutering a male, get another female. It would also be a good idea to have females spayed. Save you a lot of problems.
It's personal choice, but I would get the same breed.

If you get another dog and you are not planning to breed them, spay or neuter them.
In Los Angeles a new law has been proposed to highly tax(dog tag) any dog not 'fixed'. Shelters can not cope with the amount of abandoned dogs and the cost to taxpayers.
I have a spayed female and no burglers enter my yard!

If you are going to breed them they should be of the same variety

If you are willing to commit to another dog, then by all means do so, but make it quick. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that your dog will become territorial and then you are going to have problems like urinating in the house.

I THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO GET ANOTHER DOG. WHETHER IT IS MALE OR FEMALE IS UP TO YOU. IS YOUR FEMALE FIXED. DO YOU WANT TO BREED. THERE ARE MANY THINGS TO ASK YOURSELF.. AS FAR AS THE BREED GOES GET A MALE SHITZU. SHE OBVIOUSLY LIKES THE ONE SHE PLAYS WITH. IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO GET ONE OF THEM FIXED UNLESS YOU WANT PUPS.

Its your decision whether or not to get another dog and what kind it is or what gender it is, but it is up to the dogs whether or not to get along together.
