This would be difficult to answer due to lack of records. In WWI the losses were so great that the army dropped its regs and began taking people way below their usual standards and put many into light infantry like the Durham Light Infantry they then considered them more expendable and they were used as cannon fodder in a most cruel manner but showed their masters they were capable of great acts of valour.

I'm sitting here with my Grandfathers Soldiers Small Book. He enlisted on 27th January 1903 aged 14 years 2 months. In the Army Service corps fr 12 years. His height is recorded as 4feet 3 1/2inches. I have a 'photo of him along with the tallest man in the British army as Grandad was reputedly the smallest man in the British Army - this 'photo used to hang in Buller Barracks Aldershot I was told. He acutually served just under 30 years & won several medals -one of which was the DCM. He was known throughout affectionately as "Titch".

I did my National Service in 1956 and we had the smallest sldier in the Army. He was from Wattstown in the Rhondda valley, and stood at a height of 4ft. 7ins. He ended up doing 4 years in Colchester Detention Barracks after coming back to camp drunk one noght and when he was challenged by the guard, he smashed the guards face in with a fire bucket filled with sand.
