Agni ( fire god) is one of the demigods who controls fire, just as vayu controls wind, surya contrls sun etc.... Thus there are many departmental officers, if it can be said, in the greater universal management affairs. The there chief personalities, Lord Vishnu in charge of the maintenacne, Lord Brahma for creation and Lord Siva for annihilation.

In the Vedas it is said, bhisasmad vatah pavate/ bhisodeti suryah: "By fear of the Supreme Lord the wind-god and the sun-god are acting." bhisasmad agnis candras ca/ mrtyur dhavati pancamah: "Agni, Indra and Mrtyu are also acting
under His direction." These are the statements of the Vedas.

Lord Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad gita, chapter entitled, Opulence of the Absolute (10.23), states Agni represents Him by saying , "Of all the Rudras I am Lord Siva, of the Yaksas and Raksasas I am the Lord of wealth [Kuvera], of the Vasus I am fire [Agni], and of mountains I am Meru/"

Arjuna in the next chapter, entitled Universal Form (11.39) confirms this, "You are air, and You are the supreme controller! You are fire, You are water, and You are the moon! You are Brahma, the first living creature, and You are the great-grandfather. I therefore offer my respectful obeisances unto You a thousand times, and again and yet again!"

It would be difficult to tell exactly without the context in which it appears, but it seems to be related to the Greek word for "Lamb."
