We've genetically modified food for more than a hundred years, by crossbreeding different plants. The corn we grow now bears no resemblance to what the Indians grew, brecause of that.

Modern GM techniques are simply more powerful ways of doing the same thing that can achieve better results faster.

GMO pluses:
Dr. Manshardt, Dr. Gonsalves and Maureen Fitch developed a papaya resistant to a common virus.
GMO corn has been used for famine relief. Although, it might just as easily have been regular corn. Be aware though, that in 2002, Zambia rejected aid in the form of GM corn, from the US, because of GMO fears. This may make your economic point moot or weakened.
The EPA, the USDA and the FDA all claim GMOs meet environmental standards.
And, of course, advances in food production technology, including GMOs, may be used to combat starvation in third world nations.

Do you know about golden rice? It is genetically modified rice that provides more essential minerals and vitamins to people in poorer countries, whose main food staple is rice. However, the rice that they usually eat is nutrient-poor, and so this results in malnutrition in the people who practically live on it. The question, which is really to ask, is whether this GM rice is cheaper to produce/grow than usual rice. If I remember correctly from last semester, it is...
It really comes down, like MOST hot-topic issues today, to a matter of ethics :)
Hope I helped...
