Just looking to change my dog's food to something healthier since his sodium levels are high. Hill's Science Diet and others like it seem to have lots of fillers and bi-products.

Try Canidae, it's excellent.

All the answers you have been given seem pretty good. Nutro, Royal Canine and Canidae are all good, healthy choices. I recently chnaged my GSD's food. I had been feeding them Iams large breed for years. But, after hearing that they may be mistreating animals during testing I decided to start shopping around. I could not believe what I found while comparing the price and ingredients of Iams to that of other dog foods. In the end I went with Diamond lamb & rice for large breeds. It has no corn, fillers or by-products and cost about eight dollars less per bag than Iams. Diamond 40lbs. $22.00, Iams 40lbs. $30.00. Diamond makes other varieties of food also(I dont know what kind of dog you have). So, if you are looking for a good food that is not going to break you financially, please check out Diamond. I changed my dogs over about six weeks ago, and can already tell that their coats are shinier and softer. The only down side I see so far is that their stools are looser which makes them a little harder to clean up out of the yard. But, I think that is a small price to pay for all of the benefits I'm seeing in my dogs.

I feed my Shepherds Nature's Variety Prairie Kibble. The food is designed so that you can switch the variety of flavors for the dogs. That means the basic ingredients are the same so that switching doesn't upset the dog's digestion.
I read the ingredients for you online, and sodium (sea salt is what they use) is in the middle of the list.
I use this brand because my dog, Juneau, has a wheat allergy and I have to be very careful of what I feed her. I also have to be careful of what else the dog food plant could be processing. This company does not use wheat in any of their food, so I know I don't have to worry that their equipment will be contaminated and some wheat could get into Juneau's food.
My dogs love it. Willow will eat anything, but Juneau is a picky eater (odd for a dog, I know) and she has never turned her nose up at any of the flavors of Nature's Variety Prairie.

Look at naturespet.com. They have lots of options. And if price is not a concern look up "chicken soup for the dog lovers soul". I don't know about salt, but the ingredients are wonderful. I live in a small town and would have to order it online. I haven't found it in any store in my area. It's between $16 to $18 for a large bag - plus shipping from the west coast.

When I could better afford it I had my rescue on Royal Canin and he did a 100% improvement in overall health. His coat became full and beautiful. He pooed a lot less, too. Now, though I feed him Nutro Max. That stuff is wonderful. He loves the taste and it's fairly priced as far as premium food goes. Definately Nutro... there's so many different varieties you can't go wrong.

I cook up my own. Our old collie cross is 16 yrs this year, so it can't be that bad!!
She gets our left overs, including breaky leftovers of cereal with milk, plus mince or cheap butcher cuts cooked up with veges (I often use market seconds and leftovers) and rice or pasta added.
Twice a week she gets a tin of PAL as well, but it usually gives her runny stools.
A friend of mine makes her own liver treats by cutting liver into small pieces then baking them at very low temp for up to 2 hours, until rock hard. I can't do it, sorry, the smell is really bad! But the dogs love it.

Canidae's website has a locator. -Wellness is also a great brand, and timberwolf organics. im sure they both have store locators as well- and some you can order from the site. -if you cannot find those, try Chicken Soup for the Dog's Soul- it is also a good food. you can do a yahoo search of the brands to find the websites easily. :) im glad you are switching from science diet. UGH!

From experience I hate Hill's Science Diet, our puppy almost died from dehydration because it pooped so much. I use Nutro Natural Choice dog food and snacks. My Bull Terrier has severe allergies and since I put her on Nutro she has gotten much better, her breath is better and she poops less. I hope this helps.

Candiea is excellent if you can find it in your area. I can't find in my area. Also look at the Nutro web site. They have all natural dog foods that are excellent. I feed Nutro large breed to my dogs and they are very healthy and their coats are beautiful.
