what are the disadvantages of not having a genuine microsoft xp?

1. Lack of technical support (whether it's via updates, from your local computer shop, microsoft, or otherwise)

2. The feeling of the cops showing up at your door to throw you in the mexican jail with biff.

3. The fact that the hacker that made it probably infected it with some sort of back door virus/trojan that isn't currently detectable by conventional methods.

Shall I go on?!
If you want to save money on an O/S but you know that you must buy one, I would suggest an OEM copy, it's less than half the cost of a Retail version (because microsoft doesn't provide tech. support for it directly).

No need to use illegal software.

Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

Even if they do not go after you you will not be able to get any security updates.
