If you were take all the balls and hit them using a mechanical swing such as an "Iron Byron", I doubt there would be ten yards of distance between the lot.

Take the same balls and have "Iron Byron" swing using different wedges with different groves and faces and some differences will appear.

Take the same balls and have the average hacker hit them with their swing and they will notice differences in density (compression) and sound. Doubt most amateurs could discern a difference in spin or height nor would there be much difference in distance.

Take the same batch and give it to the pros who can shape shots and alter their swings to meet a specific situation and the differences do show. Differences in covers, two piece versus three piece balls and the clubs they use will create differences that the average hacker could not duplicate.

Over a 15 handicap? Use something that retails between $15 and $25 that you like. I can find a lot of ProV1s in the bushes once used by people who probably should have saved the $$$$$.

Will one ball go further than another ball... it depends.
I'm a 12 handicap, 51 yrs. old, and have picked up and 15 yds. or so by dropping back to a low compression ball (80 comp). I don't swing as fast or as hard as I once did, so the loss of compression was just what I needed to keep up with the younger fellas. Drive for show, putt for dough $$$.

Sure there is a difference, but that being said you probably won't notice much difference. The pro's are good enough to worry about it, most golfers aren't so they could pretty much use any ball and get about the same results.
