Not really. There was an old rumor that it kept the "capacitors charged", but that's an old wives tale. Just turn it off when you're not using it, not when you leave the room for a few minutes, though. It won't save much electricity because your TV doesn't use much... probably less than 25 cents a day.

A TV that is on uses about 250 watts so four hours of being off will save a kilowatt hour on your electric bill. If you always left it on that would add about $750 to your yearly electric bill.

There is another factor to consider. If you have a CRT-based TV screen then there is a surge of power into the heater of the main tube whenever the set is off and then turned on. That cuts into the life span of the tube. On the other hand if you have a flat LCD-based TV the screen has a backlight with a life expectancy of 3-4 years. If it is off then you are extending the time till that replacement comes up.

I wouldn't shut off the TV every time I got up to get a snack during a commercial but if I was going to be out of the house for a while it would be worth the effort.

Leaving a TV on hurts it more than turning it off. and are you serious with the saves electricity? Of course it does! Actualy no, leave it on for a month and then pay your bills. Simple experiment and youll get your answer. Then when images are burned onto your screen and you cannot watch a decent program youll defiantly know your answer.

I have to agree with Bailey but also for what amount of time are you talking about. Off and on my also shorten the life of your TV set, as it is hard on the electronic boards in your set each time you power back up.
