ENSCONCED deep within you is the urge to look fit and healthy. Welcome to the bandwagon of the `look good, feel healthy' club. The fitness mania has cast its shadow over the urbane populace and with course of time; the concept of being fit and healthy has permeated into the middle class as well. It has now acquired a mandatory rather than recommendatory status.World over, people are becoming conscious of their physical health and its maintenance through various new age fitness activities.

Everyday, people seem to be succumbing to the fitness fad, giving up their craving for high-calorie food and developing a positive attitude towards fitness. Every person has his/her own metabolic and energy levels. Understanding your energy levels and devising exercises suited to your physical and mental being will help you to lead a healthy life.

It is necessary to realise that fitness is not just a passing phase, but that it also helps to fight ailments, as you grow older.

Fitness need not necessarily be defined as aerobics or enrolling in the nearest gym. Any exercise that suits you and helps to burn calories is what staying fit is all about. Jogging, brisk walks, yoga, aerobics, dancing, martial arts, kickboxing, ballet, skating, skiing, kung fu, abs training, tae-bo, cycling and any other sport can help. By working out on a regular basis, there is increased physical activity, which leads to a higher metabolic rate and increased energy levels. If you are focusing on toning your muscles, weight training helps in acquiring the desired muscle mass. Other benefits of regular exercising include reduced stress levels, a stronger immune system and a rise in your confidence and self-esteem.

"Age is no bar for the fitness freaks of the city. They are very much aware of their well being. A decade ago, when I had just commenced business, I had a small clientele but today the numbers have increased manifold," says Dinaz Vervatwala of Dinaz's.

"Regular workouts diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular problems at bay. If you start a fitness regimen after 30 years, then a thorough check-up has to be conducted by the family physician, only then can we provide personalised care and training," explains Dinaz. "A sedentary lifestyle, depression, pollution, stressed work environment and wrong food habits are major health hazards," adds this experienced fitness instructor.

"My fitness centre has people from every strata of society including students, industrialists, film personalities, and wives of political bigwigs. Most of my clients fall in the age bracket of 30 to 50 years. My senior most client is an 80-year-old who exercises regularly," avers Dinaz.

The awareness of staying healthy should be inculcated right from childhood. Only if parents are health conscious, will the children grow up with such a bent of mind. A child should be taught about the importance of exercises and physical fitness from the age of seven onwards.

The Hyderabad Gymkhana, YMCA gym, various health clubs, and the multi-gym facilities attached to the five star hotels are ample proof that people are breaking out of their couch potato moulds.'
The Taj Banjara boasts of a multi-gym, two treadmills, weights of five to twenty five pounds, three bars for the chest, shoulder and biceps, steam baths and chill showers. Sadiq Ali, fitness instructor of the health club at Taj Krishna says that city folks have become very health conscious and as a result, are willing to spend both money and time on themselves.

The health club comprises cardio equipment, other strengthening equipment, training weights, lawn tennis, and a swimming pool. "There is an increase in the number of people coming here day by day because staying fit and healthy has become a fashion statement as well. Many of them are obese and have other related problems; hence their medical certificates help us to decide on the kind of fitness programmes they can undergo. This way we can help them reduce weight and suggest exercises which are suited to their profile," explains Sadiq Ali.

Young men are more intent on toning their biceps and building their bodies, while women concentrate on getting that hourglass figure.

The older generation is more interested in losing a few kilograms and getting a well-groomed look.

Before opting for a fitness regimen, a consultation with a general physician or a dietician is necessary. Diet and nutrition are a fundamental part of a healthy life. Apart from exercise, food habits have also to be taken care of. Cutting down on junk food helps to keep your body fit and healthy. It is also essential to chalk out a suitable diet for yourself so as to complement your fitness schedule.

"A balanced diet containing vegetables, fruits, salads, fresh juices, pulses, less of fatty foods, more liquids and lots of water help in maintaining good health. The general trend in patients is to either follow a vigorous fitness programme or a restricted diet schedule.

Both of these are harmful, there should be a combination of both diet and exercise," explains P. Sunitha, dietician with Care Hospital. "A thorough diagnosis from a doctor helps the fitness trainer understand the patient well and helps in designing an appropriate programme. Past history points out the exact problems and complications faced by the patient. In case of weight reduction it is advisable to reduce one kg per month, more than one may be harmful to health," she adds. Sunitha recommends a one-hour walk split in two of 30 minutes each in the morning and evening for the elderly and warns that after the age of twenty, foods like ice creams, chocolates, cool beverages and other concentrated drinks and fast food only tend to increase the waistline.
