It really just depends on your chemical makeup, but for the type of activity you do, it'd probably be in your best interest to stick w/ Protein based foods...
Eat WHOLE grain based rice (wheat rice) that'll be healthy. Once again with the Breads, eat WHOLE grain bread, dont eat it if it's "cracked wheat" etc..you want Whole Grain, as those give you the best burn. Quinoa (spelling??) is also a very good whole grain that can go w/ almost anything..
If you wanna add carbs, keep the count low, you dont want to add a lot, but just make sure that those carbs are whole grain based, and not based upon "enriched white flour" or "white rice" as your body will suffer in the long run..

I am currently following the nutrition plan in the book, "The Body Sculpting Bible for Women". They have a book for men called, "The Body Sculpting Bible for men".
In the book they encourage a balanced diet of Protein, Carbs and fats. You need all three and should eat a little of all three in most of your meals. Obviously you should have way less fat than protein or carbs. You can eat carbs from good sources or bad sources, but obviously you want to get your carbs from a good source of food such as vegetables. They say in the book that you can have whole wheat bread, but to eat it in moderation.
I like to eat homemade wheat bread that I make at home. I think it is a lot healthier than what you can get at the grocery store because it has a lot more nutrients.
As far as rice goes, the book says rice is ok also as long as it is small portions and as long as you eat it with some chicken or SOME source of protein and also with a little bit of good fat (from about 1 teaspoon of olive oil). Brown rice is even better to eat!
I would suggest you read "The Body Sculpting Bible for Men". It is extremely informative for staying fit and healthy.

You can eat bread and rice, but stick to brown rice and bread made with whole grains. Try Pepperidge Farm 12 grain bread, YUM! This goes for pasta too, whole grain pasta is best for you, but is a little "chewy". If you don't like the texture try a whole weat blend pasta.

Bread and rice can be healthy for you, but not so much if they are white. Choose whole grain bread and brown rice, as they still contain plenty of fiber and nutrients.

Protein meals, fruits and vegis is a good selection. When you become hungry, especially after workout, you should take sprouts. Sprouts will fulfil your protein and vitamin requirement.
You can enjoy some carbs and bread when you desire, don't fear.
