If a cavalry officer retires, are they given the option of taking their mount with them, providing they have the adequte facilties at home? Perhaps they might have to pay?

Yes, They get to take them back to their 3 Bedroom semi' in Surbiton !!!

They are the Queen's horses so not quite sure, if the horse is still of a fairly young age then i would say no, but if the horse is also coming to retirement i cant see why you couldnt put it to them (whoever you have to go to) and make an offer.

Being a horse owner I could imagine how you feel, its awfull having to retire and leaving behind something that made your job worthwhile....... your companion, your horse.

They have quite a large turn-over of horses, hugh numbers being bought over here in Ireland but very few actually make the grade.

The 'nappers', any with defects and any not up to scratch are sold on. The aged ones go out to retire.

No the M.O.D are to tight for that plus if the officers got to keep there horses I as an NCO would want to keep mine. I live in chelsea so I could leave it in the barracks in Knightsbridge.

Only a few horses are kept for ceremonial purposes and they are highly trained and belong to the MOD so no.

No they are not the horses are the property of the M.O.D. and are retired to the country side

only if they own them already, think the army is strapped enough with a ex horse fiddlers wanting to keep there nags
