My little Staffie, like most Staffies, is quite a bossy little madam, and sometimes she will *mount* our other female dog. I used to assume this was dominance behaviour, but y'know, it looks like she's enjoying it. I won't go into details and you can use your imagination, but from the way she behaves I get the impression that she's having fun. Is this normal? She's 8 now and she's always been like this. Should I stop her doing it??

It's something she does occasionally, not every day or anything like that. She does sometimes try it on with a friends male Staffie and he just lets her! She does seem to enjoy it though, she doesn't get aggressive or nasty with our other female dog, she just jumps up and has a good time for a few seconds. I do try to stop her though, simply because it can't be nice for our other female dog. She never tries it on with any other dogs, and she's never tried it with a person, thank goodness.

If she has been doing this for her whole life, 8 years, why stop her now. I'm sure she is having fun and a little enjoyment in life never hurts. So long as she doesn't make a practice of doing this to strange dogs what is the harm.

This sounds like a dominance problem. Yes I think you should try to teach her that it's not acceptable as you should be the dominant "dog" in the pack. Not to mention she may try it w/ a dog that will not tolerate it. Just try redirecting her when you see her mounting the other dogs. Grab a treat. Tell her off & take her collar to make her get off if she ignores you. Then w/ a calm firm voice put her in a sit or a down for a minute & then give her the treat & praise her for her good behavior. Down is a submissive position so hopefully by doing this it will be a gentle reminder of her place.

You're right, its not just a dominance thing, they can enjoy it, but the problem is it can become compulsive behaviour and difficult to stop. You know how embarassing it is for owners whose male dogs mount visitors legs? Imagine not being able to stop her at the wrong time. If it bothers you, try to stop it now!

Staffie's are dominant breeds and you also have another female in the house. She is asserting her dominance over the other female as she is maintaining her position in thepack being that you are the the alpha female.(I take it she does not hump you). This type of behaviour is prominently displayed by alpha wolves and is a ritual that maintains harmony within the pack without resorting to violence.I would not encourage the behaviour being that you should be asserting your dominance as the boss.

This is just a sign of dominance. If it's not acceptable to you then stop it. It would probably be in the best interest to teach her it is not acceptable in case she tries it on a dog bigger and more aggressive than her. Wouldn't want to have a fight.

My friends female Siberian does this, also! I really think it's a dominance thing because she's VERY dominant/Alpha Female (you can tell she regards herself higher than all humans except her owner!)

No, don't worry about it. It's not hurting her or the other dog. And maybe it does feel good to her.

I would leave her to enjoy herself so long has your other dog does not mind.
