There are various methods for starting a synchronous motor..
1. Using an external pony motor.... either through a gear box for a very large Synch. motor or direct on line with a cage motor. and then synchronizing it by raising the dc rotor current.
2. Starting direct on line as an assynchronous motor and when it is up to slip speed, raising the dc rotor current to allow it to pull into sych.
As a large synchrous motor has a very low starting torque, starting is generally done with the load disconnected.
