It really depends on what you'll be testing for.
For enteric bacterial cultures (Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, E. coli O157:H7), we use the red liquid medium. I think it has ethyl acetate in it.
For ova and parasite testing, we use a pink liquid medium.
And for virology stool specimens, we do not use a fixative. Instead, we collect stool in empty, sterile containers.
