Hi Alison,
I am going to be completely honest with you.

"Don't waste your money and time by going to Mt Selwyn"

Mt Selwyn's highest elevation is only 1614m and most of the ski trails are a lot lower than that. Once in a blue moon gets a good snow coverage. The last three seasons have been awful and this season is going to be just as bad.

If you want to get some skiing in go the Perisher Blue. Mt. Perisher Summit Height is 2,054m and the best time to go is around the last 2 weeks of August.

If you decide to go to Perisher Blue the best place to stay is Jindabyne. There is so much accommodation to choose from. My husband and I plus our three kids stay there every ski season and drive up to the resort.
