Generic prevacid yes, but not usually taken before meals.

It's a PPI, Pepcid Pump Inhibitor, which reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces. Generally one dose is good for 24-48 hours. For people with chronic GERD/acid reflux, medications like this can be taken daily to reduce or completely eliminate symptoms.

Taken over time, it has the potential to allow the stomach to repair damage done due to ulcers or acid reflux. Used regularly it can prevent further damage, in addition to simply releiving the pain of chronic heartburn.

There are several drugs of similar design on the market, one of the most commonly known one's being Prilosec OTC which is sold over the counter.

It should be noted that PPI's are not designed for occasional heartburn. Medicines like Tagament and Zantac are "acid reducers", which reduce the amount of existing acid in the stomach. For infrequent heartburn these are typically better and can be take "as needed" an hour or so before meals, or at the onset of heartburn (Results usually in about 30 minutes).

For very mild or very infrequent heartburn/indigestion, Tums and other anti-acids usually work fine.
