We got him yesterday evening and he has not eaten his dinner at all- the same brand that we were told he was used to. He seems to have an upset tummy- diarrhea, and after drinking water he sicked it back up. He's a 3 yr old westie, so he's not a big dog. I think he's actually been fed human food- he begs when I'm cooking or eating, and we don't want him eating that way, our cat isn't allowed. How long before we should be worried. I'm thinking it's prob the stress of moving and a possible change in diet. We will take him to the vet this week anyway, should we be any more urgent about getting an appointment- he's happy in himself and walked happily for nearly an hour with me this am!

Thing is, if he wasn't eaten what I was told he was- how can I feed him what he is used to?

You're probably right that he's been given table scraps and the such, but you really do need to get him eating so that he doesn't suffer adversely from not eating. A good idea might be to pick up one of the human grade premium dog foods (You might try EVO - it's very nutritional and dogs always seem to love it right off) and mix it in with the food that you were told that he was eating before. EVO is mostly a protein source and he should really like that - it would be like giving him some food off your plate in a way (doesn't have all the fillers & junk that many of the dog foods have). I think it's great that you're going to the vet and I think I'd move the appointment up because I don't think it's quite normal that he'd be vomiting water like that. The diarrhea could be due to the stress of a new home, but you'll never know until you check it out. Good luck...you strike me as a good dog owner who cares.

Although I'm not a Westie expert I do understand dogs. It's sometimes very hard for older dogs to adjust to a new home & they may have a tendancy to stop eating for a few days, get sick or have diarrhea. Although stress may be the culprit here I would still take him to the vet soon. Rather safe than sorry.

Give him a few days to adjust to his new surroundings. A new environment/people is very stressful for a dog. Leave some dry food out in case he should decide to nibble. My guess is that once he's a little more comfortable and his tummy's settled down is that he'll start eating again on his own. In the mean time, don't worry about him starving himself...dogs aren't that dumb...

No dog i have ever known has suicide tendancies so he will eat eventually when he knows theres nothing else. Bizarrely our ex rescue dog will only eat if you're in the room with him. Don't feed him with treats etc. Cooked chicken and plain rice are good for a dog with an upset tummy fyi.

He is probably used to human food and will reject the dog food for awhile. You just have to get him to accept the dog food so start giving him some everyday in small portions. If he continuews to not eat go to the vet and ask if they have any suggestions on this matter.

Hi ,he is just getting used to his new surroundings ,he will soon make up for lost time ,dont feed him human food ,either take him out of the room when you are eating or ignore him he will soon get the message best of luck with your little doggy ,but dont worry at the moment hes too excited to eat or missing his other family ,he will soon forget about them .

He is probably stressed from the move, especially if the other family had him for 3 years.Just be patient and give him attention and praise. He Will settle down in a few days. All dogs will eat before starving also. But if he thinks he can get his way he will hold out for awhile.

Please allow him to eat what he is used too at least till you have let him settle in and get to know and trust you all.
Its a huge shock to him to have everything he has ev er known ripped from him and now he is forced to eat a food he doesnt like.
Let him eat what he was having then SLOWLY change him over to a diet that both he eats and your happy to give him.
