Someone said we unbelievers don't understand Christianity being a 'personal relationship' with Jesus. And I don't.

So is this something only some Christians have? I have Christian friends and they never phrase it like this. And what about 'religion'. I've read answers that say Christianity isn't a religion. This doesn't make sense to me! Do you mean the 'rules', church, belief in the Bible are all irrelevant?

And how personal is personal? Do you chat? Share ideas? Or is it just you feel that somehow you are supported in your life's decisions?

Tell me more! And please make it 'personal', not 'Read the Bible" or "it says here.." unless it really helps explain. Thanks.

Hi Nobody,

When you meet new people in your life, to start with they are like strangers - you may even think what a weirdo. Then slowly you can begin to enjoy their company and gradually they can become a close friend. If you become close enough, you feel you can talk to them about anything, they will help you out and may even put themselves in danger to help you if you are in trouble.

This accurately describes my personal relationship with Jesus (or more accurately God through Jesus). You can chat with him and you can share ideas with him.

It is not something that you can't understand just by being a unbeliever. If you can understand having a friend like I have described and can understand who we believe Jesus is then there is no reason why you shouldn't understand a Christians personal relationship with Jesus without being a believer. In the same way open minded Christians can introduce a lot from other religions/philosophies to their lives so long as it is not directly in conflict with their Christian beliefs.

Understanding is the easy bit - believing requires faith. :-)

Okay, I'm a 41 year old born again Christian armchair scientist. I've been a Christian since I was 17. I never go to church now because of a social phobia and read BBC Focus, hardly a Christian publication. I'm a packing case of contradictions.

However, to the question. When I think of Jesus, I get the giggles. I feel loved and accepted on the deepest level you can imagine. Yes, I talk to him and no, I don't get immediate an audible answers back but I have had answers.

When I was 27, I was walking along a street with my sister in law and niece when the world faded into whiteness. I don't think I even broke step but it seemed like ... forever. When everything got back to normal, I KNEW I was never going to have children and there was an immediate peace. I turned to my niece and told her she was the closest I was going to have to a daughter.

My sister in law knew I had been ... getting very upset .... about the lack of motherhood and thought I was going to start ... getting upset ... again and started to tell me that I didn't know, I hadn't had the tests, there was plenty of time etc.

I knew and I told her that with a smile.

P.S. Years later, I did have the tests and they confirmed that I have a condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and one of the little nasties that come with it (as well as obesity, facial hair and body acne) is infertility.

I am a Christian. I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, my God. There is a new covenant God has already made with mankind. He has made it so that I can come to his son, Jesus Christ, and find love. I do not go by a list of rules that my church or the Bible sets forth. I live by grace. The grace of having a relationship with Jesus Christ. God has said, and now is the time when it applies, "I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." I sin, sure. But I live in the grace of God and love life.

Hello. I'm a christian. This is the way it's like for me. I live daily on faith. I believe what the bible says, and the decisions of my life are based on biblical principles. I don't give up and complain when things go wrong in my life. I try to continue to press on. Christians make mistakes just like everyone else, but we've learned to trust God and turn to Him when our lives are going through turbulence. Christ sent the holy spirit to be our guide, and help us stay on the right path.
Alot of Christians can't explain it thoroughly, but they do understand the amazing change that takes place in their life when they choose to obey and trust what is in the bible. Christianity is based on faith. Take care.

The whole "Personal Relationship" thing is not a Christian characteristic - the majority of Christians actually practice sacramental Christianity rather than a 'personal relationship' with Jesus.

The True Founder of Christianity
Did Jesus or his Apostles follow a religion called Christianity? Who were the first 'Christians' ? Who founded Christianity and do the teachings of Christianity conform to the teachings of Jesus?

The teachings of Paul, the true founder of Christianity, cannot be found anywhere in the teachings of Jesus or in those of prophets before him.

Your questions are very well in order...All men are sinners. Just as sin in came through 1 man (Adam) redemption came in through 1 man (Jesus). God is Spirit. Becoming born-again means that your spirit man is awakened. You become aware of spiritual truths. God desires intimacy with us and speaks to us in many ways eg..His Word, circumstances, inner voice through our spirit. If we believe (obey) Him then He reveals more of Himself to us. We develop a relationship.Religion is mans way of trying to please God...we cant because we are imperfect. God looks at the heart (desire) more than the act (religion). For a healthy relationship with Him you need to die to self. Rules are boundaries that are there to be followed with a willing heart...not forced upon. The Lord who sees the heart will acknowlege this otherwise hypocrisy sets in. There is also a difference between intentions and desire. Desire resides in the heart and that is what God looks at. The Bible is spiritual food (feeds the spirit man).

It is not about just 'knowing' of Jesus; but having him 1st in one's life; even Satan and his followers have him in their life (James 2:19). Suggestion; Take one step at a time in trying to follow him; Yes, one may fall and make a mistake (that happens to all of us); the long term error is not to get back up and keep pressing to him.
