Yes,there have been detrimental effects from Christianity and Islam-just like there have been detrimental effects from atheism, and people in general. There have also been good effects on society, like sicence, culture, and music.
I would like to point out that the Crusades were also waged against the Eastern Orthodox citiy of Constantipole, and that the Orthodox,in the Siege of Jerusalem, offered the Jews protection.

They have both had both positive and negative effects. Concentrating on the negative gives a very lopsided view of history, I think. But, right off the top of my head:

Christianity - Suffocated science and pre-science for hundreds of years. The whole Galileo/it still moves bit.

Did a wonderful job of stifling social change in the same period.

The Inquisition - although as I recall, it killed only about ten people a year for a couple of centuries. Horrific, yes, but it contrasts favorably with modern institutions like the Holocaust, the Chinese "Great Leap Forward", and so on.

The KKK - much though I hate to admit it, some of it's roots were in Southern Baptist Christianity, twisted (I think) out of all recognition.

Islam - Slaughered thousands as it expanded out of the deserts and through the post-Roman world. They moved through the Middle East, North Africa and Spain and were only stopped in France by Charles Martel.

Did a truly wonderful job preserving and expanding knowledge during the Middle Ages, then pretty much froze stiff around the time of the Renaissance. Seven centuries is a long time to rest on your laurels.

I don't suppose I need mention the last sixty years in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Religions divide people. Religion is man-made with the intent to manipulate and control the mases. Look behind the curtain... all of the religious leaders are humans!!!

More people have died from those groups because their invisible men who live in the clouds told them to go kill the other.

Boy, what a guy that god fellow is.
