The notebooks I mean have 3 holes nicely punched and the idea is that you tear the pages out and you can put them in a binder. But I can never get the perforations to tear properly. Is there some trick to it, like putting a ruler down the side or something that I just don't know? It's driving me mad as I use these notepads a lot. Any help gratefully received! Thanks!

Yeah, you could do what you had in mind: put a ruler in its side. It works, but if only you will do it nicely and properly. I could suggest for you to always bring a cutter, a small one would do. It will cut the pages nicely. Or, if you don't want the load of any material, just use your nails, the easiest and most common way. Fold it and place the paper between your 2 fingers and slide it in alternate ways until the paper edge is thin enough to be teared off. But it could only be done with one page at a time. So, a cutter will really help.. =)

Try folding the pages over the perferation before ripping them out....just to "loosen" the paper from seam a little easier.
