I just got a great AV amp and I was disappointed to find my cable TV service that advertises that its digital only transmits 2 channel audio. Do any of the satelite services do better?

Well, there are many types of Dolby Surround (Pro-Logic, Pro-Logic II, Dolby Digital, etc.). The 2 channels you are receiving can be processed into Pro-Logic and/or Pro-Logic II. Only certain hi-def programming will transmit Dolby Digital.

Satellite will provide Dolby Digital on their premium channels (HBO, Showtime). They do not usually carry Dolby Digital on the local station channels. However, if you get HDTV service from your satellite, that always comes with Dolby Surround.

Your satellite companies are CAPABLE of outputting the 5-channel signal to you...But the program you're watching has to be RECORDED in 5-channel surround...It's like watching "Mr. Ed" on a color TV...It'll still be in black and white.
