You should find the time when you can sit, maybe with music helping you relax so you can write meaningful notes to your friends and relatives. If you get the mood going for you, you will be able to forget about the time and write while things are fresh in your mind. Time is not what is important, doing it is the right thing to do when you are able.
I have had this in my life also. I found so many wonderful people when my son passed away.

Unlike many things I dont think there is an expected timescale on this.People will understand even if you dont deal with it for months.
You will know when the time feels right for you.If its a struggle now, wait until you feel better able to cope with writing them as it may drain you emotionally.

Normally about a week after the funeral
BUT
this is definitely so dependent on the mother that it could be years before she's ready it could be never or it could be a day or 2
depends what she wants to do

It is a personal choice of when to write the cards--but it is a part of the grieving process...acknowledge who needs to be acknowledged--thank them for their support before the whole thing is a blur and it becomes a difficult chore. Sorry for your loss

Around here, I ususally receive a card within a two week period. But I would say if it is done within a month, that would be fine.
