Independent schools do the nation a favour - not only do the parents of the kids pay tax for state schooling they're never going to use, they pay on top of that (out of taxed income) to send them to private school.

It's blinkered socialist thinking that "everyone should be equal" that comes out with things like that, and it's what put our state schools in the state they are in today - where competition is frowned upon, where testing doesn't happen because someone would have to come last, where everyone can be equally mediocre but nobody can excel.

In a socialist utopia yes it would be nice that all state schools are fantastic, all teachers are equally good (ha) and all pupils equally able to excel, but the world is unequal, and someone has to come first and someone has to come last, and the sooner kids learn that the better they will be able to cope with the real world...
