The most dangerous culprit to songbirds is the house cat.
Easily controlled by keeping the d*mned things IN the HOUSE.
If you went after every bird that predates other birds you'd have to cull several hundred federally protected species. Magpies are among the protected.

Eagles and Hawks kill many birds as well....Lions kill antelope...so if why stop at magpies? I'm being sarcastic of course! Song birds are where they are on the food chain because that is where they are meant to be. Whenever people interfere with the natural order of things it ends up causing more problems than solutions. As far as I am concerned the only justification for a cull is when a specific species population outgrows it's available food source.

Magpies are a native species and it is natural for them to kill songbirds. Humans and domestic cats ain't natural predators, but they kill song birds too, so maybe we should cull them instead. What do you think?

Many birds kill other birds, raptors, and other corvids such as crows, ravens, scrubjays, etc. It is all part of nature and the ecosystem. Magpies have just as much right as the next bird to be able to survive. No native bird should be killed. If you come to think of it, cats and people kill a whole lot more birds than Magpies do. You cannot solve killing with killing, or you would have the entire human population to kill.

No, cats kill more songbirds than magpies, cats are not indigenous and birds have no defence against their hunting strategies. Songbirds and magpies have evolved to live together. Magpies won't wipe out songbirds.
All cats should wear an elastic collar and bell.

No they are ace-my local pair are tame and don't seem to bother the blackbirds and other songbirds. Then again they get fed so much by me they don't need to.
They are part of nature.
As for the girl saying they gouge sheeps eyes out-were the sheep in comas or something? How come they didn't stop a magie about 15 times smaller than them?Or is it made up?

No, Magpies are a part of the natural order. I think they get a bad rap. I am assuming you are in the UK or Europe. Here in the states we have Magpies, but we don't have the harsh opinion of them. They are the same birds, have the same behavior, but people don't hate them at all.

once you think that way then you will have to kill lions, tigers, crocodiles for killing wilder-beast ,zebras and all the other wonderful small animals they kill and eat for survival. How about the human race that rears, then kills baby lambs, calves etc to survive . Life must go on and that's the way nature intended it to be in the animal kingdom. Its only us humans that murder animals so let the birds continue doing what they have to do . I wont go on as i am sure you get the jist of my reply

Why should we? Its nature and we should not interfere.
Would you go around killing all the human vermin that litter our streets? It amounts to the same thing except that the magpies dont know any better.
