Why can I not get free glasses from my optician? When I got my kidney infection, I got antibiotics £6.00, they made me better so I could work, My heart is treated free except prescription charge.
Yet I cant get glasses or contact lenses on prescription. I could not work with out them (pay taxes, would need to recived benefits etc.) but I have had to save for months to afford a decent pair? It that not biased against people with sight problems..
I am grateful for my corrected vision by the way.

It's simple. If the Government stopped paying out thousands of pounds in salaries for hospital manager and politically correct red tape, and generally throwing money willy nilly down the bottomless pit called the NHS.they would have enough to give free dental and optical treatment. No doubt then they would put prescription charges up to £20 per item.....

Charlie3 is right teeth and sight were free and so was prescriptions until Maggie came to power.
God knows what they have done with the money saved because they have not made the rest of the NHS any better than pre 1979.

Yeah local NHS Dentists are a big issue and one of the points on many a party manifesto to promisie to sort out.

Did you know that if you work with computers at work, your employer is obliged to provide payment for glasses for you? Ask your HR department.

Have you considered a cash plan from an insurance company? They're very inexpensive and you pay a monthly fee, and whenever you incur charges for optical or dental treatment you can claim for reimbursement for some of the money from the insurance company.

I believe there may be cosmetic issues. I always thought you could get NHS spectacles, and they usually had these hideous brown plastic frames. Perhaps this has changed.

You can still get emergency dental treatment in the A&E wards on the NHS. So if it is really painful, just pop in to your local A&E ward and see if you can get some NHS dentistry.

At least now check ups are free. I must admit where I am there is no shortage of NHS dentists so I think that I will stay with mine no matter how far away I am living.

I agree, it is a huge problem trying to get s dentist appointment anywhere in the UK, most dentists seem to be going private, that makes it even harder to get treatment on the NHS,

Welocome to the wonderful world of britain. You pay for everyone who doesnt work's dental and optical care as well as your own. Your best bet would be to give up work then you will be entitled to a lot more. You wouldnt even need to pay your prescription charges!

It's rubbish isn't it. So there we are, expected to pay money into the NHS through our taxes and we only get the benefits of using one third of it. And before we know it we have to end up with no teeth and bad sight. (sigh)...
