I think like a lot of cops I thought I'd make a difference in things. Certainally not an huge dent or even enough that it would tip the balance of things and make them better for society as a whole. But some small mark. Well...it wasn't long before you come to the realization that this isn't going to happen.
I never felt that doing this job bolstered my ego. After 23 years I came to the realization I'm just happy to have a job that will provide me with a very good pension and medical insurance until I die. Not to mention my spouse receiving 90% of my pension and medical benefits until her death should I go before her.
I guess there are some times, but very few, that you really feel good about helping someone. I can't say that I ever felt warm and fuzzy doing that. It's something you just do because thats what people expect of you...that's all. Lets face it...most people hate you. So to ensure you don't fall into the trap of letting your emotions get the best of you, you become jaded. This is why honest and law abiding citizens have bad experiences with cops. The jaded attitude and immediate "being on the defensive" clouds your judgement and people see you as arrogant and aloof.
All these years have taught me that I won't lower myself to rise to the bait. That I treat you as a normal, decent human being and even give you time to vent. Because most people who need to call a cop need that time to release their frustrations because of the events that brought you to them. However prove to me that you're an idiot and no matter what I say or do only brings scorn or insults from you than I find it necessary to shift gears and treat you the way you should be treated. With professional contempt.
Say what you want about me, my wife, my job. I could care less. However I may be a public servant but I'm no public slave. Your attitude and conduct will be the deciding factor on how I plan to proceed in my assisting you.
As far as the possibilty of being killed by someone each day" thing. You don't think about it. You make it a point to be as alert as you can and cognizant of this fact. However you can't stay charged all the time. So you carry on and do your job. After all...if you took this job you knew this was a distinct possibility anyway.
I hope that answered some or all of your question. Oh...and no offense taken. Its a fair and legitimate question. Thank you for asking and expressing an interest. I certainally make it a point to bend over backwards to help you.

If anyone does this job just for the pay, they would have to be an idiot. There are a lot more jobs that pay as much or more and you don't have to put up with the crap you do on this job.
I love my job, as I'm sure all police officers do. Whether you are solving major crimes, or getting drunks off the roadway so that it will be safer for other drivers, or just removing the parasites from society; it is a very enjoyable job. The rewards are not monetary, but it is a rewarding career.
By no means was any offense taken, thank you for asking.

There are many different aspects of the job I like from taking a case from the report to the court trial. It provides a huge feeling of satisfaction seeing it through to the end. Plus all the toys you get to play with is also interesting. I also loved the fact that everyday was different. No two calls are the same even the rushes of adrenaline at dangerous times are great. The absolute best thing was going home at the end of the day knowing you made it in one piece. Other times it was just a paycheck but I tried not to allow those days to take over.

I'm not a civilian police officer, I'm military police and I love getting up every morning and putting on my uniform knowing I'm doing some small part to ensure the people I am responsible for protecting are safe I know I can't change the whole world but I can make a difference in my corner of it. The pension and the benefits ain't bad either lol. I also agree with what all of the other posters above me said.

There are cops who like wearing a uniform. Those cops who do not like wearing a uniform tend to be into solving crimes. Solving crime is a fun job.
