Yoga is generally better for core strengthening (including the back ofcourse). it makes you flexable, which lessens the pressure on your back.

Do some back strengthing exercises and stretches.bhujangasana, pavanmuktasana, dhanurasana,marjariasana, merudandasana,viprit naukasana, dwikonasana are all helpful for you.do it under the guidance of an expert.

No, u can do sit and reach too... and yoga is dangerous while sit and reach is not, it u do not wad sit and reach is sit down and try to touch ur feet
