hi,lemme first tell you what temporary files are, there are two types one is
1) temporary files which you can see in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp folder if you have installed windows in c drive.Other is
2)temporary internet files which you can see in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

1)temporary files are used by softwares (ex.word, powerpoint) installed in your system. This is a temporary storage medium and used by programs to free up memory..for ex take the case of a office word program, when we performs too many operations like scrolling, editting on a word file the memory is used up..so inorder to free memory certain parts of the document which is not necessary currently will stored to the hard drive that is in the temp folder.
2)temporary internet files are for storing resources(pictures, flash animation etc) of a web site you are viewing, that is when you are viewing a web site, all the resources needed for that web site..may be logo(ex..that yahoo logo) or any other pictures get downloaded into your sysytem in the temp internet folder for smooth viewing and fast data retrieaval next time

3)cookies are small amount of data that is used mainly for keeping track of a user.ex.when you visit a web site ie when you type http://yahoo.com this is send by your browser(ex internet explorer) as an http request message..which will contain many sensitive data and also theese cookie,if they are already in your cookies folder(that means you have laready visited yahoo before).so yahoo will know that you have already visited the site,in that way the sites can keep track of us(end users)..these are really useful in case of shopping carts..and also sites allowing our own color selection for home page and all..each site you visit may probably drop a small amount of such info into your machine in the form of a cookie,to keep track of you the next time you visit the same site.

these are the information your computer stores about the websites to make finding it much faster next time you log on, also the information the a website has collected about you, sometime it could be helpful, on the other hands companies can collect info about you. you can delete them or change settings of the filters.
