ALL foods contain some calories, but it is believed by many (including some doctors) that some foods take up more caloric energy to digest then the calories that are in them resulting in what is called the "negative calorie effect". The more "negative calorie effect" foods you eat, the more you may lose! These are some of the foods on his list: asparagus beets broccoli cabbage (green) carrots cauliflower celery chicory chili peppers cucumbers endive garlic lettuce onions papayas spinach turnip zucchini apples cranberries grapefruit lemons mangos oranges pineapple raspberries strawberries tangerines

Negative Calorie refers to the Negative Calorie Diet. We use energy to digest our food and this concept is based on selecting your food so that the end result is that you burn more energy digesting the food than gets stored after digestion.
There are a few different types of food that do this. Check the link in the Source below for more information.
Some of these foods include:
carrot
cauliflower
celery root
celery chicory
hot chili peppers
cucumber
dandelion
endive
garden cress
garlic
green bean
lettuce
onion
papaya
radishes
spinach

The negative caloric effect is caused when you eat food that supposedly takes more calories to digest than the amount of calories in the food. This would help people lose weight (supposedly). Some foods that are said to have this property are apples, asparagus, green cabbage, beets, cauliflowers.
This negative calorie diet is debatable, since critics argue that it is not scientifically possible for something to contain less calories than the amount of calories needed to digest it.
If you are considering using this diet, please verify all the information before starting on it.
You can read more about it here:

Hope this helps!

As I understand it, the idea behind negative calories is that your body uses more calories to digest certain foods than they contribute. So that, for instance, Brussels Sprouts might use 75 calories to digest but only give you 50 and you'd be left with a deficit of 25 calories.
Dr Caroline M Shreeve wrote a book called 'Fat Burning Foods' in which she gives a list and her opinion of why they might be beneficial in a weight-loss program.
